I think that students should not have the same freedoms which a citezen outside in the community has because the rules that the school makes and enforces allow the students to be protected from what some of these freedoms allow whether it be dangerour or not. For imstance, if students were allowed too much freedom of speech this would cause somewhat of a disruption. For example. If a student came up to the principle and told him that everything he was doing was wrong and then verbally abused him than the kid would be verbally abusing someone that should be respected. Why are you going to do that to your principle? Pin the outside community can do this also but who really cares when some guy yells at you from his car and says hes gonna beat you up and calls you a bunch of names. sure its freedom of speech but what are the chances of you seeing that guy again especially if you dont know him. Slim. Just like this example many rights that people get outside the community of school arent allowed because its the schools responsibility to keep the kids safe. When ur outside its your own. They just want to look good for the parents and keep their steady job.
ReplyDeleteThey are all important, each for its own reason. However, the Second Amendment is the most important in that it enables every citizen to protect themselves from government abuses and tyranny in general. I believe that the Second Amendment was enacted SPECIFICALLY to enable the average citizen to protect themselves, not from their neighbors, but from their abusive government. All communities have police, FBI, Border Patrol, etc. to protect us from criminals. Only we ourselves can protect our communities from tyrannical government abuse.Even though self defense and home defense, hunting are indirect benefits, the Second Amendment was to keep the power in the People's hands and not the politicians who we elect.

The Bill of Rights is a very important part of our constitution and with out it the government could very well do whatever they could want with our social, economical, and politcal fate. Or there would be nation wide rebellion every ten years and a pandemic anarchy. But we have the Bill. One of the more important points of the Bill, however, would be the 2nd amendment (agreeing with joe here). this is mainly because if we couldn't protect him/herself, what could the human being do? Just sit there while some horrible atrocity is commited against my own person. No, no, no. Because I have the right to protect myself, I have the ability to take care of myself in a highly dangerous situation using the protection of metal flying at high velocities against criminal intruding on my safety. Because of that amendment, I also have the ability to bear arms agianst my government should it prove too unconstitutional or tries to hurt me in any way imaginable. If I have some way to ensure I'm not forced to do anything, it is definitly provided by the 2nd amendment.

ReplyDeleteThe most important amendment in the Bill of Rights is the first amendment of basic freedoms. The freedomof religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. Without these we would have no way to express oneself or protest to anything unjust. Creativity and imagination would be obsolete. How would we communicate effectively? It's scary to think a lot of people who live outside the United States don't have the freedoms we do. I'm very grateful to live in a country where I can be myself.

The most overlooked ammendment thats meaning has been lost in todays world and is important to me is the protection from quartering troops. This ammendment protects our privacy, our homes, our earning, and familey's. The frist point to be brought up is privacy can you conduct anything in private with members of the military in your home. Then we have our homes what could become of them if our adversaries knew we where housing members of our military. And what if the military personel came in with no supplies to contribute is that fair is that even constitutional? Last but not least we have households in the countrie that have never seen guns or combat knifes and know how to treat them we would not want little timmy shoting his brains out. There is a valid reason why there is a constituitional ammendment againt it.

ReplyDeleteyour wrong, its the 4th amendment that protects our privacy. The point you are trying to make is that the quatering of troops will lead to noesy troops, that is semi vaild execpt that your presuming that the troops in question will be following you everywhere. Think about it, do normal house guest always follow you around and stick their noses into your business?
The fifth amendment is the most (or at least one of) important amendment because it basicly protects all the freedoms enumerated on to you should you ever be taken to court. Without this amendment, the government could recklessly charge anyone multiple times for any crime (if they do not get it right the first time).It also states that your right to life, liberty and property shall not be deprived. Nor shall your private property be confiscated by the state without just compensation. Ergo the iron casing provided by the 5th amendment for your rights sees to be at the top of the list of importance.

ReplyDeleteI believe the 1st amendment is the most important because it is made up with different components.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
First Amendment: freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, and right to petition. We have the freedom to control these freedoms. We can choose what we religion we want to follow, or whether we want to convert to another faith. Nothing in the consitution will prohibit us from making these decisions.Take freedom of speech for example, we can express ourselves and our opinions, in an appropraite manner. We can disagree with our national, local government and not be jailed. In some countries it's a crime to talk against your government! These freedoms that were at first violated, as forms of greivances by the British, are what gave our nation it's birth in the first place.
Some Europeans came to America to escape religious dominace, and wanted more religious tolerance and acceptance. And when the greivances were presnted, and the British were pushing Americans final buttons, the press and speech and petition systems were a major factor in giving the public an idea why independence was neccesary. These freedoms guranteed and protected by the 1st amendment are not vital for a government, but they are a great force in directing and enchancing the citizens views and opinions.
The most important Bill of Rights o me would be the 1st amendment.Simply because of the freedom of speech.It gives the freedom to everyone and grants a chance to express themselves freely. Although some people think that because it's an amendment that they can yell out anything they'd like and not be held against it.Those people are wrong.This amendment tells you what your rights are:the right to freedom of speech,press,religion,assmbly,and petition and you're not to take advantage of that.

I think that students should have the same rights as citizens outside of school. We're all the same, so why not be able to do what everyone else is doing. I understand that our rights are limited like we've been discussing in class but they're for all of us. So i think that we should take advantage of the fact that we have them because not everyone in the world has the same rights as we do.
ReplyDelete-Blanca.G
The most important amendment of the Bill of Rights to me is the first one freedom of speech,press,religion,assembly and petition. Because in my opinion everybody has the right to say whatever they want but with its limits it must also be a proven fact. We have the right to practice whatever religion we want, we have the oppurtunity to complain about something we dont like or consider unfair. The first amendment is also important due to the fact that we can disagree with our national, local government and not be jailed just like Christina C. said. But in other countries you dont have the right to do that and you will be put in jail. Not many countrys allowed you to do the first amendment they tell you what to say, choose your religion and you cant complain about something you consider unfair or that you dont like.
ReplyDeletei think the amendement every body should kno is the 1st one the freedom of speech i think thats the most important one from all in my opinion is good for us to kno our rights dat way people wont take advantage of us especially cuz we are young they think we dont kno we have our rights n having freedom about expresing ur toughts is good even is sumtimes they aint good but you feel safe about speakin cuz in some countries u can get shot but speakin n in da U.S u have dat freedom
ReplyDeleteI think that the most important right to me would be the 1st amendment because of freedom of speech.It gives everybody the chance to express themselves individually. but i do think that there are some limitations like you cant just yell out bomb or shout obscene gestures in a public working facility.This amendment tells you what your rights are: the right to freedom of speech,assembly,religion,press,and petition and you should not take advantage of that.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with Miss.Dancer :) We as the students should be having the same rights as the citizens outside of school. We are apart of the future and we should start getting used to all these laws and ammendments inside of school too. We are just as equal and we are considered young adults.
ReplyDelete1)
ReplyDeleteI think that all 10 of the Bill of Rights are important. However, I do feel that the 1st amendment is the most powerful and best. Without the 1st amendment, we wouldn't have the nation we have now. Nothing would be happening unless we have that 1st amendment.
The 1st amendment also keeps us from falling into a Dictatorship, Communism, or a Totalitarian Government because in those types of government people don't have free speech, press, protest, assembly and so on.
Basically, without the 1st amendment, we would have no democracy. Because one of the biggest parts of democracy is being able to have popular sovereignty and checks and balances.
So the reason I think the 1st amendment is the most important is because it allows us to have the nation we have today.

ReplyDeleteI think students should not have the same rights as citizens outside of school. Parents send their children to school and expect the staff to protect the students and keep them safe as wells as give them a good education. If the principle of a school finds something offensive, he or she has every right to remove it to protect the well-being of the students, particularly the younger ones. Most freshmen this year are 14 or 15 years old and are fresh out of middle school, some of these students may not have been exposed to controversial topics such as pornography. Is it censorship? Yes, but it's for the students own good. As far as locker searches are concerned, I think that's a very important responsibility for a school's staff to possess. If a student is in possession of a gun or drugs, it is in the best interest for the rest of the student body for the staff to perform a locker search of the accused student and if anything is found it should be confiscated and the student should be punished. Even though it seems like students do not get enough rights, we still have some rights and these restrictions are only there to protect our well-being. However, we do have the right to protect ourselves from unreasonable censorship or locker searches. Teachers and principles must learn to use this power within reason and not completely censor students or search a student's locker just because they, "look like a drug dealer."

I think that out of all of the amendments in the bill of rights, the most important one is the first amendment. Without this amendment, there really would'nt be a point to living in America. The first amendment is the most basic of the amendments and yet the most important. This amendment paves the way for the other amendments to take hold in America's society.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Caleb that all of the Bill of Rights are important but that the 1st amendment is the most powerful one.The 1st amendment has four parts to it. ReplyDeleteThe first amendment out of the whole Bill of Rights I think is the most important to me because we have the freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly and petition. Without these things we wouldn't be able to give our opinion on what we think about when we disagree on something, Freedom of religion is another big impact on people because we don't all have the same beliefs and value as other people and it gives us that right to believe in what we want to.Freedom of assembly is also important because we have our individual rights as citizens. Overall i think that the first amendment is important to me and to all of us because without it we wouldn't have the right to say or do things as we please.
I believe that the first amendment in the Bill of Rights is the most important. It gives us freedom of speech, religion, assembly, press and etc... Without those we will fall into a chaotic form of government. Our government will change from Democratic Republic to Dictatorship. Having the right to say what we want to say, believe in what we believe in, argue on whatever we have to say. The list goes on and on but the point is the first amendment is the most important for the people of the United States.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tina about the rights we have in the school are different then the ones outside. The Principal and teachers have the rights to look in our lockers to see if we have any contraband. But I think its not right for them to check the lockers just because we look like a criminal. People found with illegal things in the locker should be punish but the ones falsely accused to have the right to defend their self if they didn't do anything wrong.

ReplyDeleteI think it's amazing how the majority of the students are saying that the first amendment is most important. I understand why though, because without freedom of speech, press, religion, and ect., we'd be susceptible to a Dictatorship, and not be the Democracy that we are today.
Although that is true, I would think that the 9th Amendment was most important, because it states that even though certain rights aren't specified or physically written down, we still have them (Unenumerated rights). With this amendment, even if all of the other amendments were stricken from the Bill of Rights, the ninth amendment would still basically state that we had all of those rights. Without the 9th amendment, the Bill of Rights would be the ONLY rights we would get. We wouldn't have "the right to brush our teeth" or "the right to breathe the same air", or even the right to owning a home, or even the right to an education.
Basically, with the 9th amendment, we'd retain all rights, especially those of the first amendment, and those all left unwritten. Without the 9th amendment (Unenumerated rights), we would have absolutely nothing else BESIDES those from the Bill of Rights.
Let's hope the 9th amendment never gets repealed one day ... or declared "unconstitutional", 'cause apparently in court cases, all they do is find things "unconstitutional". I'm honestly starting to get tired of the word. Heh. :)

ReplyDeleteI do not beleive that students should have the rights they have outside of school, while in school. IF students did, then no progess would be made. As humans, we are not able to agree willingly with everyone else. If we were to object and deny with anyone at anytime then there would be no reason in going to school. Any actions made by someone can be objected by another. For rules such as locker searches, ID's, and others, i think are good for schools. These rules ensure, or help ensure the other students safety from outside the walls of school. Students are in schools because of the limited rights, if students had the rights they would have as outside citizens, why would they waste time and choose to show up to school for hours a day? most wouldnt.
I think that students shouldn't have the same rights inside of school.Simply because, many students will abuse there rights will some will use them in a more creative way. Those who think they are smarter then everyone even the teacher, would use the first amendment to humiliate or as we say "dog" the teacher. While the more dangerous students will believe they could bring a gun to school for protection. Claiming it is there second amendment right. Therfore, students should have different rights in school and outside of school.

I'm not sure that there is a single most important amendment. On the 1st, George Washington said "If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter." So that's obviously pretty important.
ReplyDeleteOn government, he also said:
"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action."
I think the 2nd amendment was intended to prevent an American Holocaust from ever happening.
There's a reason why they were the 1st two amendments.

Because They exist to make sure true freedom of the American citizenship in apparent. for example 1st amendement exist so that people able to express their own values and characteristics in public, and have a say in government(petition). But how can the 1st amendment be enforced if the government say "no"..you can't do that anymore.
Well than you now have the 2nd amendment to keep the government in check. These are many of examples why i cannont choose which amendment out of the bill of rights is most important.
i think that students do have the same rights as citizens outside student gates, but to some extent. I mean, we are at school and they have to protect us some kind of way. We do have the freedom of speech, but its not as great as it were if we were out of school. We have to be respectful to the people we talk to. It's common sense. We know what's right and what's wrong. And if an administrator gears that someone has a gun or something illegal on school grounds, i think they have every right to check you or your can. I just think that kids don't understand and take advantage and abuse their rights and thats why we are where we are.

I think the most important amendment in the Bill of Rights for ME would be the first. Without all those guaranteed freedoms, I wouldn't be able to be who I am today. I wouldn't be able to practice my faith as strongly as I do. I wouldn't be able to speak my mind and express my opinions. I wouldn't be able to speak out for causes I believe in and everyone would just be so restricted on what they say or do. We would be limited in potential. Students in School shouldn't have the same rights because of the fact that most students are not mature enough to properly exercise them. The school environment is completely different than those in society because employers wouldn't be babying the employees such as teachers do. The key issues if students were to have full rights then the punshments would be more servere such as detention or ISS might turn into going to Juve. Students don't know how to use their rigth to speech because it would lead into gossip or worse of all destroy other's reputation just from a petty arguement about relationships in high school. The right to press might led to graffiti all over the campus or anonymous flyers everywhere. In school students follow rules and order, but when we have the right to believe that it is literally a "free country" then this order would not be kept. Students will attempt to act like adults and demand this respect when they have no proof in order receive such treatment. And if we gain one thing as a student body then we would lose something in return, for example we would have the right to our privacy but this would allow students to bring illegal items on campus thus causing the campus to start having security at every gate and even metal detectors. Our privacy will be preserved to an extent but more than likely still be searched for our own safety then leading to the feeling of being violated in our rights just because of the schools fear of violence.
ReplyDelete1) The first amendment is the most important to me because it allows us to have free speech, press, religion, assembly and petition. I think this is the most important because it allows us to say and basically live life to the fullest and express our opinions. We are allowed to choose our own religion which is a very good thing that makes America a great place to live in. We should also be able to say what we want with some restrictions for example you cant cuss at school or use profanity not school acceptable. With these freedoms we are allowed to be ourselves and express ourselves in the ways we want and this is a proud characteristic of America. Without the first amendment you wouldnt be able to do anything.

I think that students should retian there rights when inside the school. If the school is in America than we should still keep our rights. And the last time I checked schools don't transport people to foriegn lands. The school has to abide by the constitution no matter what. Schools shouldn't be able to check our PRIVATE lockers either. Sure, the school can violate our rights for a reason but they can't just decide one day to do a locker check and go looking thruogh peoples personal belongings. If any other place has to abide by the constitution than so does any school.
ReplyDeleteI believe that student that are in school should not have the full rights that citizens have outside of school. There should obviously be rights that they have, but the school should be in control of what happens dealing with the students. Once the students enter the campus they are under the control of the school system, and they must abide by their rules. If the students are given too much freedoms in the school, and can do almost whatever they want to, there could be major problems that everyone will have to deal with. There has to be limits to what a student could do, for example, if a student had a gun, the school should be able to search them. The student should be searched and have the gun taken away, because if not there could be major problems in the school, students could possibly die. Another example could be a student using their freedom of speech openly, they could be disrupting many students in school, and could possibly be harrasing them. The school shouldn't let one student disrupt everyone's learning. There should be limits to what the students can do on campus, and the school should have the responsibility to regulate what rights the students should and shouldn't be able to use.

Students should not be allowed the same rights as other citizens. The fact is that they are being privileged with an education. Thus, they should be held to a higher standard then the average citizen. We all pay taxes to ensure that all minors are given the chance to go to school and acquire a basic education. I think many children forget that education is not a right - it is a privilege. They are extremely lucky to have a country that considers education a compulsory right. Don't get me wrong - I think students should be treated fairly. But they need to realize they area at school under special circumstances, which makes them under the jurisdiction of the government, and the regulations that they choose to impose on the students.

For example the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of press, peaceful assembly, and right to petition. I believe that out of the all of the Bill of Right the first Amendment id the most important one. I believe this because it established freedom of speech, press, religion and petition. The 1st Amendment describes how congress shall make no law respecting and establishment of religion, thereof freedom of speech and press. With the 1st amendment establish in the constitution people have certain rights in the country such as freedom of speech. Which, describes that everyone is free to say what they think without getting in trouble? The 1st amendment also prohibits the establishment of a national region by congress. Therefore, people have the right to believe in any type religion. Without being obligated to believe in something else. The Civil Rights should no abridged religious belief or worship. The national religion be established, nor the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner.

Obviously, I think the first amendment is the most important. It lists all of our basic and essential freedoms. However the aspect of the first amendment that has the most value to me is the freedom of religion. This may be the least important to all of you but religion occupies a big part of my life. As a Witness, its comforting to know that a governmental document protects my right to exercise religion. I realize that there are plenty of people that don't approve of, and actually find my form of religion as a nuisance. I am also aware of the fact that a few words printed on paper only can go so far. But for now it'll suffice.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important part of the Bill of Rights is the First Amendment because it lists our basic freedoms. Without these, America wouldn't be the same as it is now because it was founded as a free nation. We have the freedoms of speech, religion, petition, assembly, and press. They are essential to being free individuals. The freedom of speech seems to be the most important to me because it connects to all of the other freedoms (press, religion, petition, and assembly). These are all ways of expression that allow you to show what you believe in and think. In countries without these freedoms the people are oppressed and not allowed to actually be themselves. I think there is a big problem with that because they aren't able to fully live their lives like I am doing in America. When people are forced to do something, like compulsory religion, it usually causes them to rebel, but in America we have avoided this because of our freedoms.

I would definitely have to say that the first amendment beats out all the rest in my book. The United States wouldn't be what i know it as. The basis of American patriotism is based on our freedoms.I can't imagine what life would be like, what America would be like if the government restricted what i was allowed to say...well, it kind of does, but, I think its at reasonable degree. I think a lot of times we take it for granted, while others on the other hand abuse it... yes, you chatterboxes, im speaking of you. Freedom of religion! Isn't that one reason why those Brits came here in the first place, to get away from their king and practice their own religion in their little colonies? ...If im wrong I'm sooo sorry Ms. Hollister, and all my other history teachers, the beginning of the year, I'm not always there. It's important that people have the choice to practice whatever religion or absence there of. It inhibits tolerance, which is always a good thing. Freedom of press! Again there are limitations to this, but I feel like they are relatively reasonable. I think that those are the most important parts of the first amendment for me. Peaceful assembly and right to petition are important to, but i dont really exercise those everyday, consequently, they are on the backburner.
ReplyDeleteOut of the entire Bill of Rights the most important has to be the first amendment. This amendment which outlines citizen’s basic rights is probably why it is the most important to me. It gives the right of freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petitions the government. Because this amendment gives me the freedom of speech I feel that it is important because without the freedom of speech government would be able to control the citizens. This could lead to a loss of major rights and would undermine the federalist system. Also without the basic rights of freedom of press then the government would again control what the people see and know about. Another part of the amendment that makes it very important to me is the right to have ones own religion. This becomes very important because it allows me to have my own beliefs about religion and it’s not forced upon anyone. Most of the rights listed in this amendment make me feel that it is the most important one because it allows everyone to have their basic freedoms and creates the center of our federalist ideals.
ReplyDeleteI believe that students in school shouldn’t be able to have the same rights in school as citizens because the only reason they enforce these rules on the students is because they worry about our safety. Our parents drop us off at school each day expecting the staff to protect us and keep us safe. If we have the rights of citizens in school we would have a lot of chaos, and I’m pretty sure that there would be a lot more violence. We still have certain rights, and it’s not like we’re imprisoned it’s just a way to help children learn in a safe environment.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to rights as citizens and students, the line can be blurry. I think that students should have the same rights but only to a certain extent. Students should still be treated equally among other student in the school and get For the same respect. For example, if the administration has probable cause to believe that a student may havesomething harmfull in their locker, they should be able to look through it without a warrent. Also, if students were to get all the rights that average citizens go, many students would take advantage and test the limits of the school. Students may tell the teachers thier negative opinion of them using foul language and expect it to be protected by the first amendment which would cause even more debate on how far it goes. I feel that students get the right amount of rights today. At the end of the day, the school should give them enough right to still have control and have a safe environment that allows students to get an education.
ReplyDeleteVictoria Magana
2) I do agree that students should have less rights than adults, but there should be limitations. For example, I believe that searching of property should be allowed, but with the notification of the student and his parents, and should be limited to what they are searching for. If the authorities have valid evidence that a student possesses drugs in his locker, then the search may be performed, but should be limited to drugs. If they don't find drugs but find a cell phone in the backpack that is on silent, it should be excluded from the search and not confiscated. Obviously, this should be reasonable, and if they find a gun in the locker they may take that up. Keep the students safe, but be reasonable. Second, the source of the evidence should be valid. With all the drama going on in high school, it would not be suprising that someone says that their friend that didn't vote for them for homecoming court has drugs in his locker, just to cause trouble and see what would happen. The tip-off can be great, but the administrators need a little bit more concrete evidence before tearing everything apart. Finally, there should be less censorship in the clothing. If I want to wear a shirt that says, "John 3:16" or something similar, I shouldn't be looked upon differently, asked to not wear that shirt again, or asked to change immediately.
ReplyDelete2) I do not think that children in schools should have the same rights as the citizens outside of school. I come to a public school, where I expect to be protected and educated. If all the citizens in this school had the same rights as those outside, such as protection from search and seizure, it's reasonable to assume that there would be a huge amount of drugs and other contraband items. If I didn't feel safe at school because people could get away with having drugs, knives, or whatever else, there is no way I could concentrate on my education. Parents send their children to school with the knowledge that there is extremely minimal possibilities of dangerous situations , and that there is protection provided. How many parents would want their children in a school where there is no threat to the students if they bring drugs or weapons to school? I know I wouldn't be here. The rights that the citizens outside of school have apply to their lives and situations, and the rights we are given in school apply to our situation. We are allowed to voice our opinion, we are allowed to form clubs and groups. We have the right to point out faults in administration or problems with our teachers. We are all treated equally, without discrimination. The rights that don't apply to us, like the protection from search and seizure, the inability to bear arms even if you're over 18, and the censorship of clothing and apparel, only protect students and teachers. They are not taken away to obstruct our freedom, just to prevent the negative effect that drugs and weapons and offensive material have on a learning environment.

I believe that students should not have the same rights as citizens outside of school, however it cannot be taken to the extreme. The reason why students should not have the same rights as outside citizens is because, students are attending school to become educated. That is the sole purpose of what school is about, to learn. Sure, they may have some freedoms but these freedoms should have restrictions on them based on what the administration believe is proper for that specific school. It should be left up to the school of how to deal with specific issues amongst the campus. For example, obscenity should be protected from school campuses because it is not something that should be exposed to at a school. The governemtn does not have restrictions on obscenity. The school grounds should be kept a safe environment for all students, so they should be protected appropiately. So making different rights for students in school from those outside is a proper way to ensure their protection.

ReplyDeleteStudents in school should definitely not have the exact same rights as citizens outside of school. In that same manner teachers should also not have the same rights that they do outside a classroom setting. Parents send their students to school with the expectations that they will be given a quality, non bias, and fact based education. If students and teachers alike are given complete and total freedom of speech per se, then that is guaranteed not to happen. However, there are appropriate ways for school officials to handle censoring classroom material and things that are published in school newspapers and handouts. Search and seizure however, is a right that ought to be reserved to school officials, if and when they see fit according to the school policies already set in place. It is not unreasonable for a principal to search a student’s vehicle if a trained drug dog “hit” on the car; they need to have reasonable proof to search it. Rights allowed in the classroom need to be dealt with individually and somewhat specific to the situation at hand.

ReplyDeleteAnyways,
the amendment that is most important to me, as many people have already mentioned, would be the 1st amendment. I'm not saying that the other ones are not important, because they really are, and we are fortunate to have so many rights. But the ones that i enjoy most are the freedoms of speech, press,and religion (petition and assembly too, i guess haha). I'm a very opinionated person, and it would be so horrible if i had to hold everything in. I love being able to discuss topics freely, and not be prosecuted for what i believe. Freedom of speech doesn't end with just spoken words. We also have the freedom to express ourselves through the things we wear. I also love that i can practice whatever religion i want to, without having to be afraid that someone would kill me or something. It wouldn't be so great if someone tried to force a religion on me either, or tried to restrict me from practicing the religion i wanted. Freedom of press is major too. I want to be able to be able to read other peoples works, without it having to be monitored for things the government doesnt agree with, or doesn't want us to know. It's also nice to know that i have the freedom to write whatever i want, or advertise how i want as well. Those are the most important freedoms to me from the first amendment of the bill of rights.

I think all of the amendments are pretty good, but my favourite would have to be the first one. Theres a reason it was first one up there. Im glad I have freedom of speech where im able to say alot of things. The freedom of religion helps us not get all crazy and genocidal *cough* Nazi Germany *cough*. Freedom of the press is pretty great because it covers alot of forms of communication. The right to petition gets us involved in our politics and government. If we are upset over a policy we wont get jailed for opposing the policy. The right to assemble is democracy in action. Without this protesters would not have a strong effect because they wouldn't be able to march or get together. They would be doing boring stuff like blogging instead of getting out there. All these rights have thier limits, but they seperate us from totalitarian societies

I believe all of the Bill of Rights amendments are very important in the society we live in because we have grown dependant on them as fundamental rights for every single one of us as individuals. To me though, the Ninth Amendment stands as the most important because of its implied rights to the people. Since the Bill of Rights secures the people’s individual rights in only 10 amendments, it’s obvious that even our founding fathers would’ve forgot something. As time goes by, that forgotten something becomes more and more individual rights. Thankfully, this amendment gives implied powers to individuals to not simply be restricted to the rights thought up on the specific bill. In this sense, I see the Ninth Amendment as an example of the elastic clause. By not noting a specific right, to me it seems that the founding fathers we’re depending on Congress to make laws necessary for the best of their citizens. With that said, I think a lot of the individual rights Americans enjoy today wouldn’t have been possible if the Ninth Amendment hadn’t been written in the Bill of Rights.

The Bill of Rights is a very important piece of our Constitution. It spells of the Immunities of individual citizens. It also gives the citizens their own rights that can’t be interfered with by the government. I would have to say Amendment 4, which is search and seizure regulations, is the most important. One because everyone needs to have privacy and are sort of allowed to do what they want as long as it’s not illegal. Because if your doing something Illegal, then you deserve to get searched- if they a have a warrant-. Also this one is Important because if you are hiding something in your house from your family, and it’s not Illegal, then he/she has a right to do that. But if the cops decide to break in looking for something, and end up exposing the family to that new car your hiding for Christmas, then privacy was invaded for no reason and ruined a perfectly good surprise!!.

I believe that all of the Amendments within the Bill of Rights are all important in their own unique way. However, the First Amendment is the one that i believe affects me as well as all people in the U.S. the most. I think this Amendment is the most important one since it provides me with a right to have the beliefs and thoughts i wish to have. It also gives the U.S. the characteristics of a democracy. The reason i say this is because in a democracy the voice of the people is what counts. And this is exactly what the 1st Amendment does, strengthen the voice of the people. I believe that without this Amendment America wouldnt be the great country that it is. In fact, it would probably slow down much of the progress that America has gone through since the days it was founded.

I beleive that students should not have the same right in and outside of school. Not to say that they should have no rights, but that they should be limited to an extent that still allows the school to serve its purpose and be a safe environment. Contrary to what many people may argue, censorship is a vital part to the education system. Without it, i strongly beleive that Drug use and violence (because of easier access to weapons) would be increased and the quality of education would be down the drain. Take for example the protection of seach and siezure, if it were in effect and the authority was unable to search and confiscate a weapon, chaos could occur. Although things still slip through the cracks, the system we have now prevents so much. If a public school were to offer equal rights, problems wouls taint the quality of education and the school would be incapeable of fufilling its purpose. However, the school much also use their powers responsibe becuase its abuse too could result in much conflict.

Out of all the amendments in the Bill of Rights, I would say that the 1st amendment has a significant impact towards everyone which I find myself important. Freedom of speech, press, religion, right to petition and assemble is crucial to America because if we didn't have these rights, well America wouldn't necessarily be America anymore. If I didn't have freedom of speech, my voice could not be heard if say there was an issue within my community. Without freedom of the press, our government could censor information with the American society would like to know of so they can be politically involved. If I couldn't practice my religion, I would go nuts not being able to express my beliefs. Going to another country where my religion is not accepted by society, I might get killed or sent to prison. Gladly, that is not the case for America. Though we are able to express our thoughts towards the American government, we still have to remember that if we decide to exercise this amendment, we have to remember our limits. Without those limits, America in my opinion would be a society covered in chaos.

I believe that the first amendment is the most important out of the Bill of Rights. I think without the freedom of speech, press and religion alone, the government would definitely have a strong control over the citizens. Without the freedom of speech, people wouldn't be able to state their opinions, which could possible help the government or country overall. Then if the newspapers or media couldn't have the freedom to report on an issue, then the citizens wouldn't know both sides, but instead if the government censored it, the people would only know what the government would want us to think. And I'm glad I can believe in whatever religion i please, because so many people are being persecuted in other countries because of their beliefs which usually lead to their death or imprisonment. And without these basic freedoms, i think everyone would be trapped in what the government wants them to know or think. And i think without the first amendment, the other amendments are pretty useless. Because if you don’t have the right to have an opinion, how are you suppose to exercise the other amendments that depend on your opinions? Like in the 6th amendment, how are you suppose to decide fairly if someone is guilty or not guilty if the government censored some of the things that the witnesses were going to say?

Like many people have said, I agree that all the amendments in the constitution are very important in their own way, but for me the most important one would have to be the first amendment. In the first amendment there are five parts, which are freedom of speech, press, religion, petition, and assembly. To me this is very important because if there is something that the government or higher ups are doing something that is unconstitutional or inflicting danger to me I can do something about it. Like for freedom of speech and press, if I have an opinion about something I have the opportunity to publish it to the public and the people that concern the matter at hand. If we didn’t have this amendment than we wouldn’t be able to express our view of the government and the world as we see it. Petition and assembly are similar too except that you and other people that share the same thought can gather in an area and protest about the issue. If we didn’t than all the power would end up with the higher ups and the people that have money and power over the weak. As stated, the first amendment is a very important amendment because it lets us share our opinions about the people that govern the people and the nation. With these opinions we, the people, can shape the nation that is helpful to us to the fullest.

Out of the Bill of Rights I believe the most important amendment is the First Amendment because it gives people their basic liberties; freedom of speech, press, religion and petition. This way the country makes sure everyone has these freedoms that many have been fighting for. This is what us different form other countries, what makes us a free nation. Everyone is different in their own ways and have different opinions and with this amendment we are able to express and say what we want even if it disagrees with someone else's opinion. Every person has the right to express, be, and act as they please without any punishment for doing so. This is very important to the government because it shows them what the citizens think of their rulings and laws. The other amendments are important too because just as well as people have their freedom they should be able to be protected by the law and have the benefit of the doubt as well and so on.

I don't think that students should have the same right in school. There is a point where a school has to limit speech to the students. Some students would talk inappropriately too much or use language that should not be used in the classroom. A lot of students are immature and wouldn't even know how to handle having all the rights. With search and seizure, students should not be bringing anything to school that gives the school a reason to search but if the school wants to do so they should have that right. There should not be any reason to care if they do. Student rights should be limited in schools like they are when it comes to things like freedom of speech and search and seizure.
I think in the bill of right the most important is the first amendment. It controls the freedom of speech and press along with religion. If this amendment wasn't on the bill of rights alot of things would be very different. We might have different people as presidents and law makers. Even different laws. I know i would want to be able to voice my thoughts on things with out going to jail or getting killed like during the soviet union. To me it is most important to know that what i think is ok and that i am not brain washed.
ReplyDeleteMonica D per5
I believe that the most important amendment is the 1st. Especially the rights to free spreech, free press, and petition and assembly are vital to our government. These rights form almost another check and balance on the executive and legislative branches of our government. They protect the flow of information to the people from being stopped by the government. This means that if the government does something bad, they would have a very difficult time hiding it. Thus the population would lean what they had done and would not vote for them in the next ellection. These rights are also vital to free debate. Free debate enables us to hear all opinions so that we can make good choices as a country. Over all i doubt that democracy could survive without these rights.
ReplyDeleteEthan K per. 5
I definitely agree that the most important amendment listed in the bill of rights is the first amendment. As a basis of all democratic freedom, a citizen must be able to speak not only freely but openly about his beliefs, opinions, and petitions. One of the few places where I know that I am protected by law to share and form my own opinions in the world, I cannot truly comprehend what it would be like to live somewhere else, where this right was not guaranteed to me. If not for this monumental step in ratifying the most important document in the history of the US, I believe our nation would be very different than it is today. The first amendment not only contains the establishment clause, something that I believe strongly in, but the freedom of religion as well. Our founding fathers migrated to America to protect their inalienable rights as people, fleeing religious persecution and seeking independence from a history of injustice and unsanctified rule. This amendment is completely necessary to the success and a free and independent nation and as a country that protects the rights of the people it governs, something that the founding fathers worked tirelessly to achieve. The strength of our community, the power of our nation, and the spirit of the American people would not come close to the state it is today without each and every one of these rights listed here.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else who has said that The Bill of Rights is a very important document and all of the amendments are important to how we as a society function. For me personally I would have to say the most important however would be a three-way tie between the 1st, 13th, and 19th. Being a girl and Biracial would not be easy if we didn't have the abolition of slavery by the thirteenth amendment, which abolished slavery. I'm a firm believer in people being created equal and having the same freedoms so how can one race say they're better then another? Even though modern day slavery still exists it's not legal in the United States and that's great.
ReplyDeleteNext is the 19th amendment which is woman's suffrage. How I see it is: Women>Men. Haha Just kidding! Women have much as a right then men do, if you think about it men wouldn't even be here without them. Yes, they may be stronger but still it's not right to discriminate and not allow women to vote just because you don't think there brains are large enough to handle politics.
Finally without the 1st amendment I wouldn't even be able to say all of this. I believe our country would not succeed without the people. Our country was built on the belief that the government would be for the people by the people and our voices are the most important.

I think that students should not have the same rights as citizans outside of school, because school is an institution that is there to educate the uneducated. I do believe that some of us do deserve all the rights that citizens get out of school, but because there are those who abuse it in school I'm ok with the fact that we have restricted rights. Also by restricting our rights it keeps students from violent acts that would normally be allowed to be conducted outside.

I think that students should not get the same rights as the people outside of school because lets face it we do make some pretty stupid decisions. Its part of growing up. But because of this we need some rules and regulations to tame our wild whims so that we can get a proper education. And school is kind of like a mini government for minors. It has to have some set guidelines for even to follow in order to have a balance and organization to things. And it has punishments for those who misbehave and rewards for those who do excepionally well. It also keeps the masses happy with these rules. There is such a variety of people within even one highschool that there has to be a medium. For example not everyone is comfortable with vulgar language and clothing. So what does a school do to keep that exposure level down, they place rules against obsenity and have a dress code. And then there is a matter of religion because again there is such a variety that youo have totame the fervors of those who are extremly dedicated because not everyone wants religion forced upon them and open religion would cause constant debate and arguments. In schools we need to have rules and limitations because there is a main objective, to educate and if students had all the freedoms of outside the gates there would be disruption chaos and there would not be a chance to get the proper education to future generations. And knowledge allows for a better life.

ReplyDeleteAll the admendments are important to insuring our rights from the government. They tell the public what rights they have over the government but only one admendment lets the people enforce those rights. The second admendment is the one that enables the public to defend themselves if the government crosses the line. Only two things stand in the way of the government infringing the rights of the people. There is the morals of the government leaders and an armed populace. Our country was founded on the beliefs that the citezens should be able to revolt and they can only revolt if they have weapons to fight back with. It is not the one that most people deal with everyday but it is the one that protects the last barrier ensuring citizen control of the government. The second amendment is the most important because it insures that the other admendments are followed

ReplyDeleteI think that students should have the same rights in school as out. As we are growing up the goal is to teach us how to become adults. This becomes increasingly hard if we don't even get the rights that adults get. At 14 you can be tried for capital punishment in Texas. Yet, we have no rights to truly express how we feel. I think this is a huge problem that needs to be ironed out. Showing Respect is one thing. Teaching us that America isn't as free as we thought it is, is another issue.

I think the first amendment is the most important. To me, it is the most important because it lists major freedoms we are entitiled too. For example, the freedom of religion. We are entitled to practice any religion we choose. Some countries do not have that luxury. That freedom is important to me because I am religous and I couldn't even imagine how my life would be if I wasn't allowed to practice my religion. Another important part of that amendment is the freedom of speech. Having the freedom of speech is incredibly important and a lot of people take it for granted. We have the freedom to express ourselves and voice our opinion. That section of the first Amendment is important to me because I believe everyone should be able to speak their mind and not have to worry about the consequences.
ReplyDelete1) I think that the first amendment is the most important out of the Bill of Rights. Not to say that others aren't as important, but having the freedom of speech and religion as well as press are all beneficial. Having the right to practice whatever religion we want is easily taken for granted in the US, but there are other countries around the world like Iran, where this right just doesn't exist. The freedom of speech makes it possible for US citizens to be able to say what we want when we want. It entitles Americans with a voice, a voice to speak up for what we believe in and what we want. It also offers a platform for people to speak their mind and not be chastised or shunned for it. Also, the first amendment allows the right to petition, which helps in the fight against something we as Americans might deem as wrong. Its done in a peaceful way and allows once again for us to be heard. The first amendment gives US citizens a right to assemble and discuss something that we think the government must change which I think helps to get the word out about an issue that is effecting Americans in a harmful way, peacefully.
ReplyDeleteTo me, the most important amendment is the freedom of speech. It’s what the U.S. is based on and I want to be able to say whatever I wish to say. Be it true or false, unfunny or hilarious. It allows everyone to express their true feelings. People can't participate in the government if they can't express their feelings. The government limiting our speech would impair all other rights, and we would not be treated the way we want to be treated. The ability to say as you wish is why the US is the greatest country in the world aside from the North Pole. It’s a sacred right that means that the moment it’s removed from the constitution is the moment to move to somewhere nice, like Africa or China.

I think that the most important right to me would be the first one. I belief is really important for the people to have the right to express ourselves. By having that right we are allow to agree and disagree with everything that has to do with us and with our country. The first amendment give us a huge opportunity to make our voice be heard and to have a bigger diversity about opinios and contrast. It also give us the right to share our thoughts with people that think the same way we do by assembly. We can also express ourselves by putting down our ideas in paper.

My most important right in my opinion is *drum roll*.....the first amendment *BIG SURPRISE* If i didnt have those rights, and the people around me didnt have those rights, we wouldnt have so many differnt forms of expression. If it wasnt for the first amendment, most people would never have there voice heard about whats really wrong, and what they need help with. I dont believe students should have the same rights a citizens. The freedom of speech would obviosly be a problem. Kids would say things that would get them in trouble but there would be nothing teachers could do about it. The right to bear arms would also be a problem in school. Students could kill each other if everyone was able to have a weapon on them at school. Students should not have their miranda rights as well. What a student may be holding in with out speaking may be hurting another student. Students in school do not deserve the same rights as citizens outside of school they are just not ready for the responsibility as a whole.

I agree with Caleb about how the first amendment helps us to be the nation that we are because those other types of governments do not allow free speech and related things and because we have those granted to us in our Constitution there cannot be a takeover by those other types of governments.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Duk that it is hard to pick an amendment that is the most important because they affect all of our lives. There is a reason that the Bill of Rights had to be passed in order for every state to be on board with the ratification and that is because these are all important rights that every citizen needs.

The first amendment to me is the most important because it is a freedom of certain things. Freedom of religion, speech, press, etc..., but the important thing is we have the feedom, as what others have said in this blog which is a good point. Other countries are restricted to some rights and freedoms. For example, how North Korea is very strict about their leader, and how its people have restrictions. If some people of a family try ro escape and get caught, the rest of their family will be put in concentration camp. We got to be thankful that we don't have harsh things like that for example.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone when they said that the first amendment is the most important. Our freedom of speach, press,religion,assembly, and petition is what makes America a Republican Democracy. Without those basic laws we would be no better than slaves. America would be a dictatorship in which the people had no power over their own government.Its scary how in the past these dictators how treated their own country. That make me of my rights as an American that I can have a chance to change wwhat I don't like about my government.
ReplyDeleteI don’t entirely agree with Ottomagne. Education isn’t a luxury but a right, and thus should not constitute a privilege. Article 26 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that, “Everyone has the right to education.” Key word here is “right”. Dictionary.com defines right as, “that which is due to anyone by just claim, legal guarantees, moral principles” I agree, we are extremely fortunate to live in a nation where they basically hand us an education. But I feel like your missing the target here. I agree that students should not be subject to the same rights as citizens outside of school, but not because students are held to a "higher standard than the average citizen," per say, but because the school is an institution. Students at school are subject to another layer of authority. It’s like when you go chill at someone’s house. You can’t just do whatever you want. You must abide by their rules. Same applies for school. Hopefully the school administrators implement rules and guidelines for their students that foster education. Because remember, a schools sole goal is to educate.
ReplyDeleteI just would like to agree to everyone who said that the most important amendments is the first one. People need to voice their opinions. Look around you…look at your tabs, your facebook updates, myspace bulletins, blogs, twitters, blah blah blah. Americans have grown addicted and dependent on voicing their thoughts and opinions. The fact that we share our opinions isn’t a bad thing, it just can get out of hand sometimes. So its not surprise to me that most people believe in their freedom of speech. Second, everyone wants to be able to do what they want. Noone really would admit to want restrictions on what they can do. So there, it’s not that were being selfish, its just our nature as human beings to want to voice our thoughts. And now there are so many ways to do it. So kudos to the government for not taking that away from us.
ReplyDeleteLenitie, great point!
ReplyDeleteReason why I chose the first amendment over the 9th was because the government would have a way harder time enforcing these “unemurated” rights. Think about it… the government would have a heck of a hard to trying to enforce laws that say, “made it illegal to brush our teeth”. Think of how they’d enforce that. Too much time, money, and resources. I think the government would restrict our freedoms of speech before they started counting how many breaths we take a day.
I agree with what Erica,Christina, and what most people said about the first amendment. I also think that it's very important because of our basic rights. Everyone needs to have them, because without them things would be so much more difficult. Like Christina said, we have the right to choose our religion or disagree with our government.Then Erica talked about how you shouldn't take advantage of them, so i also think that's a good point.

I agree with Kim, when she was mentioning that because, our the safety standards and the requirements we uphold for school we, cannot have the same rights as ordinary citizens. Because, if we do we would have a chaotic scenario because, everyone would be expressing their freedoms through protests, and expression. These forms of expression would create a distraction to the learning environment. And what if the students disagree with a school regulation, like school dress code, they can perform civil disobedience and wear what they believe is right, and therefore going against their superiors- the teacher, and administrators.
I also agree with Aaron, we a an American society have a right to defend ourselves and our rights whenever the government goes too far. This is critical because, if we don't have a system or an idea of how to protect our selves and values, no one else will.
And lastely, I agree with Gabii(lol) because, its absoultely true. The first amendment is kind of cliche and alot of rights and protections fall under that category. It is essntial for our self- expression and protection.
I agree with Karen. Yes, the first amendment is important to us and it’s not like we are saying the other amendments aren’t important. It’s just that without freedom of speech, press or petition. No one would be saying with they think.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Pauline. If we don’t have the first amendment the whole United States would be different. It will become a county with no freedom.
I agree with Loraine. She is right how most of the student that is still in high school is not mature enough to handle the rights citizens have. Even though some are mature enough, but not most.
@Britttany-I completely agree with you that people do take believing in their religion for granted. I think we know what happens to them, but we don’t completely understand the consequences because we are already so use to our freedoms in the United States. And I think because we’re so use to our freedoms, we don’t see how great we have it through the first amendment. I think that’s goes for the freedom of speech, press, and assembly too.
ReplyDelete@Steven-I agree that student should definitely not have the same rights are a citizen. I think if we did, school would be useless. Nobody would be learning because the students would most likely take advantage of their freedom rights. And I think everyone would end up not going to school because they would have the freedom to not attend.
@Rebekah-I believe that the freedom of speech connects to all of the other freedoms too. I think without the freedom of speech, the other freedoms wouldn’t have a big impact as they do now. And I agree that rebels are created in other countries because their government gives them no freedoms at all, and they can only rely on themselves to fight for it.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Lydia with that all the Amendments are important. I also agree that with her that the 1st amendment is very important because it has 5 parts. The five parts consist of free speech, press, religion, petition, and assembly. Together all of them give us plenty of freedom and protection.
I also agree with Tina in that students shouldn't have the same rights in school that they have outside of school because they need protection, along with good education.
Lastly, I agree with Duk when he said that all the amendments are important because together they all make us free Americans. They make us have freedom by giving it to us and keeps the government in check.
THe most important amendment from the bill of rights has to be the first amendment because it allows us to have the freedom of speech,press, religion, assembly, and petition. i think that its good to say or believe what ever you feel because of the bill of rights but it should be to a certain limit. i think that we as the people of the U.S should say whatever we feel but not pass that certain point where drama starts to happen as a end result.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading all of these posts, I too believed that the first amendment was probably the most important amendment in our Constitution. However, after I read yours I completely agree with you. The Ninth Amendment gives us so many implied powers that we aren't even aware of. Many liberties that we take for granted. The Ninth Amendment is the most important because of it's ability to give us rights that aren't listed in the Constitution. I think that that's more important than any of the other amendments.
@ Amy Glezen
I would have to say I disagree with the 4th Amendment being the most important of all amendments. I strongly believe that the fourth amendment, many people could live without. I would rather have the right to express myself, and follow any religion I desire without any intervention.
@ Donald Brooks
I agree with you on your whole post. Students should not have the same rights as citizens outside. There are many hypothetical situations that you gave that are absolutely correct. The school has to ensure that the campus is a safe environment for learning. If people had the right to bear arms and bring them to school, who knows would could happen at any moment in time. Students should be kept to a abridged version to the bill of rights, reasonably abridged of course.
@Justin N.
ReplyDeleteHaha you're absolutely right. I concur! I think that without that right to freedom of speech, we wouldn't be able to be who we are or express our individual beliefs. Without this right, it would just make the U.S. like another North Korea. We'd be condemned to believing what the government wants us to and saying only what is allowed. Education would also be impaired as you wouldn't be able to teach or preach what you wish.
@Calvin B
I think you have a point about treating us as adults in school meaning the same rights as outside of school... But I also think that some of us, not saying all of us, are too immature to handle such freedom. I mean would you want to go to a school where people could just go around yelling obscene things and have nothing be done about it? Sometimes things are just inappropriate and totally unnecessary to express at school.
@Liz S.
I would have to agree with you, Liz. I think that as students we need more restrictions than outside of school. There's no need to allow us the ability to profane and just spread the "bad" influences we have nowadays. And after all we are still entitled to our opinions and what nots. Allowing total freedom of expression and speech would definitely impair education or perhaps even corrupt it. We need a safe learning environment, not an obscene one.
@ grace
ReplyDeletehey grace! I would like to say that i agree 100 % with what you say. I there was no first amendment then who would be there to say that we even get those rights. Every other form of anything done in government depends on this basic right. Overall it seems like this amendment needs to be considered the most important right because it is the foundation of all other rights that we recive.
@tahweesah
ReplyDeleteI think you made a very good point about Calvins article. I mean it is very true that the level of freedom of speech should be limited much like we are in everyday society. I think that the freedoms of students should not be the same in school because it is a public enviornment and most of the people who go to public school are under 18.
@ Nicole Janda
ReplyDeleteI agree to some extent as to not being able to have the same rights in school as out but overall I dont believe that people would begin to bring that many contraban items to school and overall feel that maybe a few more rights may be nice than what I have at school right now.
@James G.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's important that we have the second amendment, but i don't think it's the most important. In fact, i believe the gun laws should be more strict. Guns are not the only way we can protect ourselves.
@Calvin B.
I agree with you on part of that. I do not believe that we should have the same rights of the outside world, although they technically should be preparing us for reality. I do however agree that it is unfair to be able to be tried as an adult (or sometimes they actally wait until you turn 18), without getting the same rights. If they're going to restrict our rights, then punishment should be minimal as well. Unless of course it's something huge, like murder. That's a no no.
@Omar B.
I agree that we should not have the same rights in school, as out. Whether we like it or not, we are in school to learn. There should be minimal distractions, not saying it can't be fun, but it has to be educational. Also,parents are trusting that we are being protected from all the bad things in the world. Administrators have the right to track everything that goes on in the school. Unfortunately, we still cannot be trusted to do the right thing if we have too much freedom.

i agree with donald. Students do not deserve the same rights inside the school as outside. As students, most people do not have the responability to handle the work. And if they had the right to bring arms to school, environment at schools would be chaotic. So ultimately its best for kids not to have the same rights as citizens. There would be no point to walk into a building for hours everyday.
@ tahweesah
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the first amendment is the most important amendment in the Bill of Rights. It is because of this amendment we are able to speak up for what we believe is right without being censored.
@ tweddledumb
I completely agree with you. Even though students are still technically citizens, we still need restrictions to establish a safe and controlled environment that fosters an opportunity for everyone to receive and fair and equal education.
@ Loraine
I agree with you on the maturity level of some students. If students are given full rights during school, then some of them might abuse this right and get away with things they should be punished for.

I agree with Laura. the first amendment does create a set of the basic and most recognizable rights. I also agree with her point that our freedoms are what set us out from other nations. We are a free nation, and should not be taken for granted. Its great to know that we are all able to be different. Also that we can express ourselves in different ways.
@ Caleb he brought up a good point when he said without the 1rst amendment there wouldnt be true freedom. And it is very true
ReplyDelete@ Laura said it perfectly, the student know whats expceted when comming to a public school. So by knowingly comitting a crime or giving probable cause for seziure its the students fault. And certain things that arent permitted shouldnt be brought to school.
@ Gio 9068 You mentioned people in prison not getting the same rights as inocennt people is a good thing, but you never explined why..Can you elavorate on that?...And isn't people in prison citizens of America too?
@ Donald, I totally agree with you in the fact that if students had all of the rights of citizens there would be problems with gun control which could result in death. Good point!
ReplyDelete@ Loraine, I also agree with you in the fact that students would not be mature enough to exercise their rights to the intended capacity. I also liked the thought of ISS becoming more like juve since the actions that got them there could be more dangerous then before.
@ Taylor, I 100% agree with you on the students shouldn't have equal rights but the shouldn't be pushing it. I would feel like my rights as a human being were violated if the police just bombarded my car without notifying me until after they had done it. I also agree on the religious discrimination idea. If people can wear shirts expressing their political ideas (like the Obama shirts) then why can't other wear shirts relating to religion. It's not like they're saying any certain religion is wrong. So I agree with basically everything.

i agree with Christina C. Her idea that the first amendment is made up of different components make sense. To have control of these rights are a great privilege. And nothing in the constitution will stop us from expressing these rights. The right to object and protest the government is a powerful right. So the 1st amendment is pretty important. Although all the amendments contribute key things, i agree with christinas view about the first amendment.
I know she said in class we didn't have to do this blog response for this week, but I'd feel a lot better having done it so... =P
ReplyDelete@ Haleigh C - I agree that kids should not have the same rights in schools as we do outside, but I think that schools should let up on some things. I think sometimes schools have rules and/or guidelines that are quite ridiculous. Like, maybe we SHOULD be able to use cell phones in case of emergencies instead of having to go and find a phone in the main office. But maybe in the end, there are too many different circumstances to address when using cell phones in school so it COULD be best to prevent their usage altogether, hmm? : )
@ Justin N. - I agree with you. I think you made a good argument of how limiting freedom of speech may impair all other rights.
@ Pauline - You know, you have a really good point yourself and I agree with you. But.. some people may actually be sick enough to analyse whether we DO have the right to breathe or not (without Amendment 9). Look how long it took them to legalize slavery solely because it wasn't specified in the constitution if all people could have equality.
Lenitie C, 2nd period
I think the first amendment is the most important of them all. Its five parts establishes and protects the rights of every individual as an American citizen. It allows us to practice religion or speak our minds without anybody intefering. We can all be whoever we want without getting discriminated against or punished for our beliefs.
ReplyDelete@ Liz:
ReplyDeleteYes I highly agree with you. Censorship in schools is important to an extent. Violence and drug use would become more involved without the rules we have today in schools.
@ Gwendolyn:
That is an artisitc was to look at it yes. The creativity that people come up with today in songs, books, and movies make are society. Look at Green Day. Over half their songs are aimed at the Government and how flawed it is. Imagine a government where we wouldn't have that!
@ EVERYONE ELSE
It seems we pretty much all agree that the 1st amendment is the most important hands down. And I'm sure if we took a poll, then most Ameicans would agree. However, I'm hearing a lot of the same reasons why its the most important. (I'm guilty of it too). So I was wondering if maybe any body else has a reason why it's important that hasn't been explained yet?

ReplyDeleteI agree with Justin that the 1st amendment is crucial to American society. If we couldn't express ourselves,would there be a government? There would be some form of governement but we wouldn't be able to make change, no one would here or consider our thoughts. Without the 1st amendment America wouldn't be the greatest country in the world as it is today.
@ Amy G.
Sorry Amy but im going to have to disagree with you on this one. The 4th amendment isn't all that important in my opinion. The 1st Amendment hold a much greater value compared to the 4th amendment. Without expression, well we would be stuck in a hole where we can't escape.
@ Donald B.
I have to say on this one...i agree completely agree with you. Many students aren't ready to use their rights or even understand them. If they were able to bring weapons to school, the learning environment would be disruppted and chaotic. Students wouldn't even show up to school. Yes students have thier rights but to a limit.
Alex N. 5th period
@everyone who agrees with the first ammendment being the most important- basically these rights basically describe what america really has come to and how much power we citizens have towards the government. The fact we can give our opinion to change a law or rule that will help everyone.
ReplyDelete@ Blanca G.- I disagree that we as students should have the same rights as citizens while were inside of the school, because If we as students, during school had the same rights, one alot of the people will be disrespectful towards teacher and not get in trouble, because they can say we have to freedom of speech.
@ Kimmy- I agree strongly that the reason we shouldnt have as many rights in school because it wouldnt be that safe at school. The only reason they do this is because they worry of our safety!!
@ Kimmy
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, students shouldn't have the same rights in schools as cotizens outside of school do, becuase it is safer that way. In my opinion students arent't mature enough to have all these rights. Also the free use of these rights in schools could lead to violence which would then mean that schools are unsafe. This is why people need to be educated about thier rights and the government first.
@ Rebekahbradley
I agree with you, America woudn't be the same if we don't have our basic freedoms because after all the U.S. was founded as a free nation. America has more peace than other countries because of these freedoms that we have.
@ calebduncan
I agree with you, I believe all of the 10 amendments of the Bill if Rights are important. I also agree with you on that the first amendment is the most powerful. Because of these basic freedoms that we have is that we are a democracy.
@Martin R
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that all of the rights expressed in the Bill of Rights are important. The Bill of Rights is one of the few curbs on government power that the citizenry has.
@Leslie
I think you are right to say that we students have most of the same rights that regualr citizens possess outside of school. It seems to me that school is a special situation, because we are all here to learn useful information - whereas in normal life people living in the same area are usually there for very different reasons. Schools have a very specific purpose, and therefore they enforce very specific rules that enable them to educate us.
@Christina C
I agree with you (this seems to be a topic that most of us agree on)that we have a right to defend ourselves and our rights whenever the government goes too far. This is a fundamental American belief that our nation is based upon.

@Avery C.- I totally agree with you on there being a tie between those three ammendments because the U.S. would be a totally different differnet place without those. The only people who would be benefiting from the 1st ammendment that we cherish so much would be white men. Women would till be at a subserviant status because women suffrage was the turning point for our modern values, and wihtout it women would still be at home, seen as homemakers. We would Also still have slavery and at present many people travel to America for the freedom and protection everyone gets but if we still had slavery or we're at a point of segregation, we would be behind the 1st world countries.
ReplyDelete@ Omar B.- I completley agree with you. Especially about the obscenity. Schools are so diverse and you have young freshman some who have not been exposed to lots of vulgar language. And since a school is expected to protect the students they have to make it a place were even the most innocent of people can feel comfortable.
@ Taylor F.- I agree with you on most of your post except the shirt part. For one I have seen plently of people wear shirts with bible versus on them, even I have done it, and they do not get in trouble for it. But overall I think there should be restrictions on the shirts you wear because again not everyone in a school is comfortable with sexual inuendo or vulgar language. And with kids as young as 14 I think it is just best to keep that kind of stuff outside of school so everyone feels comfortable.

ReplyDelete@ Pauline- I agree the first amendmant is the most important and like your examples of ho we voice our opinions.

I agree with Justin because I also believe that the most important amendment is the freedom of speech. We have the right to say anything we want to the public. It also allows everyone to express their true feelings. The government shouldn't have the right to limit what people think or say. Because in other words the government is controlling what they want for the people to hear and see.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Gabi Marinez because she also believes that the 1st amend is the most important one, because it allows for everyone to believe in their own religion. Many of other countries don't believe that people should follow a religious belief. Therefore, that country doesn't believe in the first amend because they are controlling everything even the religion. I am also a religious believer like Gabi and if one day the govt start controlling what we have to believe I wouldn't accept that whatsoever.
I also agree with Laura Cipra because students shouldn't have the same rights in school like they have outside school, because students will start doing inappropriate things in school. Which this means, students should have school rules and policies in order to keep them under control. I also believe that if the principle wants to search a student they are welcome to do that, but only to students who look suspicious.

ReplyDeleteI agree that if students had all the rights in school instead of some restrictions, drug use and violence would increase. I believe that even if some students were up to the task, most would their unrestricted rights in the wrong way. Just imagine if a student had a license to carry a gun and decided to take it to school. I think most of us have some sort of idea of the potential disaster that could occur. But I also agree that we have to watch out that the school doesn’t try to abuse its power of censorship.
@nicolej:
I believe that an important part of what makes our current school system very functional is that although we don’t have unrestricted rights, it’s still flexible enough so that students can voice our opinion, just like you said. In a way, I think the system disciplines students to force themselves to act responsible and make mature decisions. When students make those choices, they’ll realize that they wouldn’t have made that same choice if they were at home, for example. The school system helps us grow up almost independently only with the restrictions that might help lead our lives in the right direction.
@ Almost every1 else:
The first amendment is definitely one of, if not the most important amendments in our Constitution. Without those essential five freedoms, individuals would have almost no protection when it came to basic liberties. This perhaps, would’ve led every individual that made an argument leading to the Supreme Court to lose his or her case. I believe that these basic five freedoms are all over the Bill of Rights, only a lot more general than in other Amendments which is what makes it so difficult for government to set up boundaries to limit our individual rights overall.
Nilsen Sagastume 2nd Per
@Lenitie C.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about the 9th amendment. The 9th amendment basically is all the rights that are not included in the constitution. Those rights are called Unremunerated rights and lets us do everyday things without breaking the laws and put to jail. For me, that is important as well as all of the other amendments, but this amendment gives us the rights on how to live our lives in our home and other places. And I also hope that the 9th amendment will never be repealed or declared unconstitutional because that would totally stink.
@Duk K.
I also agree with what Duk said about all the amendments being important. And about it being there to make the true freedom of the American citizenship. If the 1st amendment was not there anymore than we will have a government where we, as citizens, have no say in the matter and will have to obey with whatever laws the government passed even if they seem unconstitutional. These amendments gives the Americans the freedom and to keep the government in check. I also agree that it was hard to pick the amendment that was the most important from the rest.
@Andrea R.
I totally agree with what Andrea said about the 1st amendment being the most important. Having the five parts to the amendment shows that we the people have the right to say what we feel about the government, an issue, and other matters that affect the citizens of the United States. Without this amendment, the government would most likely be a dictatorship where everyone has to follow the laws no matter right. So, I’m glad that we have the 1st amendment in the constitution and hope that it will stay there forever.
Lydia C.

I agree with Haleigh C. in that their should be restrictions on the rights of students. High schoolers do often feel tempted to do foolish things, and schools do have to make allowences for the large variety of students that attend them. Because of these reasons rules are needed. However, it is also important that there are restrictions on the rules. Our school rules and policies sometimes got to far and no longer make sents. The tardy policy last year that had kids sit in the cafiteria actually kept people from learning, and the rule against beards and sideburns has never been logically explained to my liking.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Seth K. The first amendment is indeed what I think to be the most important. Afterall, how could the American government be a government "of the people, by the people, for the people" if we could not express our sentaments? With out the freedom of speech how could Americans change the government so that it is "by the people?" How would we know what to change so that the government was "for the people?" Finally, how could we know if an oligarchy was forming leading, America to nolonger be "of the people?"
I agree with Liz S. Students should not have the same rights as during school. I also believe that it would lead to an increase in violence and drug use that would make school an unsafe environment and unable to perform its function of education. I want to strongly emphasize the responcibility of the school that you mentioned in your last sentence. If shools abuse their ability and take advantage of the students limited rights, especially those of search and seizure, they could commit legitament injustices. The restrictions on students rights makes them more vulnerable. Because of this there needs to be limits on when we don't have certain rights, and they should be closely adhered to.

@Pauline (since she's been so graciously wanting me to respond): In retrospect, I seemed to misconvey my point. My point wasn't to say that education was a luxury (which I did erroroneously say in my previous post), but to rather say exactly what you said; kids are forced to abide by the government's rules since, in a more colloquial sense, they are in the "government's house" now. What I meant when I said my spiel on privileges and such was not that I think that education is a privilege, but rather that the kids are privileged to be going to school. I agree that education is a right, but let's face reality: not all children (or even adults for that matter) get the education they need. We just recently discussed the child-slave issues in other countries, and, to supplement that, "some 100 million children [are] without [a] regular education", says citymayors.com. As much as we say that education is a basic human right, basic human rights are denied people everyday. My point wasn't to argue that kids going to school is a privelege, but the fact that they live in a place that doesn't strip them of their rights. It was more of a "stop complaining, since there are those without your rights," kinda deal than an "This is what education is..." argument.
@Justin: Agreed. The first amendment is what America unique, I believe.
@Joe (and anyone else with a similar argument): I don't really agree that the 2nd amendment's purpose is for people to have guns to protect itself from the government. Obviously, tyranny was fresh on the minds of the Constitution's writers, but they were setting up a (back then) innovative and relatively new type of government to which they saw few flaws. They meticulously crafted this government with all sorts of checks and balances to prevent a tyranny, so I really don't believe they were concerned with making sure that the people had guns to kill a tyrannical government. I agree that the amendment is important, but I don't agree with the reason you laid out for it. It is for protection...but not from the government.
@ Ethan K.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the first admendment is important and that it protects the flow of information. The first admendment protects a lot of rights but the second admendment protects the first admendment. Without it the government would have no reason to follow the first admendment as there would be no way to enforce that the government behaves.
@ Lenitie C.
The ninth admendment does include a lot of rights but it leaves it up to the government to decide what they are. The admendment doesn't actually defend any rights that the government doesn't want us to have which is why the founding fathers wrote the other admendments out.the second admendment is the only one that allows the populace to have the government doesn't agree with.
@ Haleigh C.
I agree that students should not have the same rights in school. The primary objective of schools is to educate and a lot of the rights not given to students hinder that purpose. The schools should have the right to keep those hinderences from being allowed.
@ TJ
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything that you said about the rights of students in schools. There should be limits to what the students should be able to do inside the school buildings. There can't be problems in schools because the students claim that they should have absolute equal rights as people outside. There have to be restrictions to what they can and can not do. The school is responsible for keeping students safe and also for educating them. I am in complete agreement on your thoughts about the student rights.
@ Tina
I am also in complete agreement with what your thoughts are on student rights in schools. It is the schools responsibility to make sure that the students are safe and get a good education. Everything that the school restricts should be reasonable to the students. The schools must use their authority reasonably within school grounds. I agree with what you have to say about all of this. Also, the method and exceptions of the locker searches are very well described.
@ Preston
I like the way that you describe how the students should be limited in their rights. Education is a privilege that our country sees it as a compulsory right, I agree with this. Many countries in the world don't have these same thoughts. I agree that students should be treated fairly and they should still be kept to a higher standard. The schools that they are in have been paid for by the taxpayers dollars and they need to be well educated. They do need to realize that they are under certain circumstances.

ReplyDeleteI agree with your point, but your reasoning is flawed. Limited rights has little to do with students being in school. I believe that students would still be in school even if they had full rights; school isn't meant to limit our rights, but to educate.
@Loraine
As with Steven, I agree with your stance. Graffiti would still be illegal (vandalism is vandalism). I think the outcome would depend on how the rights would be implemented. If they were just randomly granted one day (this very day), then what you described is possible, but if it were implemented slowly and carefully (or maybe two hundred years ago), I think the outcome would be different (that is, more positive than you see it).
@Joe Weathersby
I wholeheartedly agree! Armed resistance is the single greatest and most effective form of protection and survival against any government depravity. One might even empty their clip (or two!) before being taken down (most likely by retaliatory gunfire).
^Justin N.
ReplyDelete@Alias
ReplyDeleteDo you really think that kids will stay in school even if rights are really limited. I am slightly thinking that kids that feel oppressed or limited in their rights are more likely to drop out or switch schools than others.
@Preston
Actually I agree with your first statement; school and education is a luxury. In America it has been twisted to become a necessity and almost a chore for some, but it is only this way in America. Look at many young lives being led in Africa. If you were to give them a chance at education and proper schooling, it would be worth more to them than any monetary value you could assign.
@Seth/Ethan
I do believe and agree with both of you in the importance of the 1st amendment. Not many people also realize that not only does it give us very important rights, but sets the basis for most other rights and movements. The right to protest and assemble is a key right in movements across the nation. Many, if not most other amendments have roots in the 1st amendment.

@ Blanca G I disagree with Blanca G in the sense that students should have the same rights as when they’re in school and as when they’re out. This would mean kids could carry concealed weapons in school and blow. This would also mean they could have the freedom of press for their newspaper and write offensive or obscene things in it. Children need guidelines and boundaries so having all the same rights in school wouldn’t be beneficial. It would leave the door open for too many problems. School is a place for students to learn and this means there needs to be a controlled environment. Students should have a different environment in school and not the same rights because there are too many distractions in school. Having the same rights would be detrimental.
ReplyDelete@ Ingrid I agree with Ingrid 100 percent. I chose the first amendment as the most important as well and we touched on the same topics that make it the most important. I agree that people should have the right to speak their mind and say how they feel, with the appropriate limitations, without there being a consequence.
I also agree with her on how people should have the right to disagree with the government and be able to talk about it or petition. This right secures the people having a voice and showing that public opinion does matter. Other countries do not have this right and Americans should hold it to a higher esteem. Being able to speak up and out about whatever you want to, whether it be about politics and the government, would be unimaginable in certain places.
@ Avery Avery opened my eyes to the how much the 13th amendment really is. Not that I didn’t know what it was before. But she give a valid reason for its importance. Without it I would be a slave right now and society would be so behind. I agree that it is important in that sense. I also agree with her stating that the 19th amendment is important as well, because as a woman I want to have the same rights as men, all the same rights. It isn’t right to discriminate against anyone be it race or sex. The 19th amendment helped to deter that and that makes it important in my book and one of the most important amendments.
@Lenitie C.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said. I didn't realize it but the 9th amendment is important. The fact that it allows us to have rights that aren't written is probably more important. If all those other amendments were not written, we would still have basic rights.
@Christian D.
I agree. Just like what everybody else said, the first amendment is important because it allows us to have the right of free speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion etc. But you brought up a good point, the freedom of press and petition allows us to get involved in our government. (even though most people don't)
@Tina P.
I agree that we, as students, should not be allowed to have the same rights in and out of school. If we did, every student would feel like they could do whatever they want and say whatever they want. Most of them do already believe that but are shot down by a teacher/principle telling them what to do. This is possible because we do not have the same rights in school as we do out of school. I also agree that even though the teachers and principles have the power to censor or search the students, they should not abuse their power. Its not right that they should search students that LOOK like they are hiding something.
@Tori
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tori, and Loraine when they said students should have the rights of citizens but with restrictions. However, students are young and like to push things to their limits. Frankly we're too immature to handle all of the freedms of a regular citizen. Those restrictions are set to prevent incidents of the such.
@Nicole
Freedom of speech is important. In order to fulfill our civic duty of political participation we need this freedom. Think about it, what's the point of being abreast of the issues if you can'tdevelope an opinion about it?

ReplyDeleteI believe that students should have the freedom of speech but it should have their limits. they shouldnt just not have it.
@Nicole J
I totally agree with everything you said. :D
@Liz
I agree with the things slipping through the cracks but you have to stop somewhere. you can't just change everything once you get in school.

Hmmm i think the frist amendement is the most important one of all,because it pretty much backs you up on what you want to say or what you are fighting for

Another amendment I believe is important is the third amendment, because it covers us from troops coming into our homes. If we did not have this amendment then there would be alot of problems. Today, in my opinion, you just can't go into peoples houses and demand alot of things. It may look like you are being supportive to the troops in a way, but the troops would be the ones overdoing eveything.
